Some companies will request that you obtain your Australian Business Number (ABN). They'll pay you a small amount, and you'll have to do your taxes. In most cases, this is not the correct way to go. It is often done because the employer is too lazy or inefficient to manage payroll.

The first question the ABN application will ask you is

business owner

The tax will then be calculated based on that combined income. If you are a full-year tax resident, and your total income is less than $18,200, then you won't have to pay any tax. This means that you will get a full refund for all tax paid in the year. You will not receive any tax back if you earn more than the threshold or you may have to pay more tax due to your Australian tax return. We get many people who have to get their ABN Tax Return.
